Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park Interviews

Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park has the distinction of being Montana's first state park. The caverns were discovered in 1892. Tom Williams began bringing friends to the cave and later approached Dan Morrison about developing the caverns as a tourist attraction. The Northern Pacific Railway took over ownership of the caverns in 1908 and turned the site over to the federal government which resulted in it becoming a national monument. The federal government lacking the means to develope the site turned it over to Montana's State Park System in 1937. This oral history consists of a recording of the opening ceremonies of a Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park reunion including individual interviews with John Little, Kent Webber, Lee Loomis, Kit (Catherine) Stevko, Glada Ann (Nichols) Godfrey, and Arlene Weber and their work as park rangers at Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park (1955-2006). Tape 3 side A was recorded over as part of the Gada Godfrey interview of side B. Side B is continued on Side A until tape counter 125 where the Kit Stevko begins. (OH 2216)

Sound recordings: 3 analog cassette tapes (3 hours).
